Salvia officinalis is a perennial sub-arbrisseau of the lamiaceae family. It is native to southern and central Europe and Western Asia, but is now growing in many temperate regions. The plant averages 70 cm to 80 cm tall and has quadrangular and lignified stems with grey-green or purple woolly leaves. It gives typical flowers grouped in cymes that can be blue or blue violet. Renowned for its aroma, the sage officinale is appreciated as an ornamental plant. It is also cultivated for the production of essential oil and for phytotherapeutic purposes.
